razors and hair cuts

Anyone thought about haircuts and shaving. Good razor blades are out of site already. I don't plan on having hairy legs WTSHTF so I am trying to figure out the problem now.
I read that if you freeze your razor blades to absolute zero and dry then with a hair dryer after using them they last a lot longer.

Another answer is the straight razor. I think I am going to order one. Here is a boring but instructional video on sharpening a straight razor and using it for shaving.
Is anyone here already using a straight edge razor?

Re: razors and hair cuts

Rinse your razor blades in alcohol after you finish shaving. The primary reason blades go "dull" is not that the metal blade loses its edge, but the build-up of hard-water deposits along the edge. Rinsing in alcohol "dries" the blade and keeps the deposits from building up.

Once I started doing this, a single blade will last 2 - 3 months.

No more shaving, and haircuts once every seven years.

I call that progress, not a liability of TSHTF.

River Rat, you don't want your wife having hairy arm pits and looking like a wash woman do you? If TSHTF we are all going to be stuck in close quarters for long periods of time. A little grooming would make that situation much better. The end of the world is NO excuse to be shaggy.

I learned to cut hair years ago by asking for male volunteers. I'm pretty good at it now. Next I want to learn to use a straight razor. Volunteers for that might be harder to find.

I welcome the return of flares :)

As for haircuts, wash your childs hair, brush it all downward, place a mixing bowl of suitable size on child's head and cut around it. Cut straight line above eyebrows. Bowlcut!

I was wondering about this...till I realized you were a woman...little slow today. :s9:

Anyway...Not being anywhere near brave enough for a straight razor, I use one of these babies for shaving head and face.

I just pick up an extra pack of blades every now and then and vacuum pack them. They ought to stay sharp for quite awhile that way.

Something that I haven't tried but supposedly works to preserve a blade's sharpness is to store the blade in baby oil. Anybody every try this?

Nothing wrong with hairy legs. If you think otherwise, you're a victim of successful advertising.

The reason women 'believe' hair is disgusting is because during the war, silk stockings were scarce. They'd shave their legs to imitate the 'look' of wearing stockings. They'd even go as far as using eyeliner to draw the seam down the back of their legs.

After the war, inexpensive nylon stockings were invented.

Somewhere along the line having hair, hairy legs and underarms, was equated with being dirty, unclean.

It is purely an American ritual.

European women wear nylons, or not, with hairy legs.

Gold hedge, I spent a lot of time in Europe. I could never adjust to the site of a beautiful woman dressed in fashionable clothes with hairy arm pits hanging out. It wasn't about being dirty looking, it was about being hairy looking.
I realize I am a cultural victim but my arm pits will be shaved.

Re: razors and hair cuts

Yeah, I've spent too much time in Europe to be grossed out by a woman's natural hair. Get over it.

I always keep my hunting knives slightly oiled to keep the fine edge from oxydizing and going dull. This also works with a razor of any type but no one does it as its a pain in the butt. The alcohol idea is an excellent one too but unless the fine edge on the blade is oiled/protected it will be the first part to oxidize.

Keeping your arm pits shaved is not always about what men want.

Walker, you get sensitive man of the day award. :) Yes those products do work for legs although they are too harsh arm pits. Actually I will be fine. A bag of razors will last me forever. I was thinking of men with tough beards who eat up razors when I suggested the straight razor.

YouTube - How to shave with a straight razor part 1 - equipment
YouTube - How to shave with a straight razor part 2 - The Shave

QWAK,Many years back when I started preparing I bought several strait razors and a strop down on Maxwell St. in Chicago. I praticed several times and always shed some blood. It is an ART that takes time to develop and no one BOTHERING you or you could slit a major ARTERY!:s9:

I eventualy just stoped shaving all together.

Now I have reached a happy medium and only shave when I go to town so a double edge razor blade lasts me a couple months.:s9:

Heating with a wood fire and shaving with a strait razor is doable but tends to get OLD real fast!

This post is very representative of male-female communication and how it goes wrong.

The post was suppose to be about razors and how guys could keep their faces shaved WTSHTF. It somehow morphed into hairy female armpits. Its a diversion tactic men use to avoid the subject and I am quite familiar with it.

Duck, I think a straight razor is a long term answer even if its a lot of trouble. If I can be trusted with a shotgun I can be trusted with a razor right? Any volunteers I can practice on.

Re: razors and hair cuts

I shaved with a straight razor for years. Yes, you will cut yourself when beginning, but eventually you will get the hand of it. After many happy years with the straight razor, my ex used it to cut a piece of leather and, well, I ripped a hole in my face the next time I shaved.
I always meant to replace it but re-adjusted to the twin blade system instead.
I think you would use a tremendous amount of energy freezing blades to absolute zero. Way cheaper to just buy a couple of years worth. After TSHTF you will probably go a few more days between shaves anyway.

The Dynamo Shaver
Does a bear shave in the woods?

OK, so maybe you don't care what the bears think of your 3-day growth. But if do you care, & you'd rather not use a blade, or find that electric outlets are rare when camping or travelling, the Dynamo Inertial hand powered Shaver is a pretty neat little gadget.

A simple multi-blade rotary shaver that works by hand power. Squeeze the shaver several times to get the dynamo flywheel blades spinning at high RPMs. Then use it like any electric shaver. A small mirror is provided on the side, along with a cleaning brush.

Do I need to keep squeeing while using the shaver?
Yes. Although it has an internal flywheel, it needs to keep spinning to be used.

Are replacement blades available?
Unfortunately, no. But with six sharp blades, the shaver will last along time.

.........I'm surprised no one mentioned this.

I shave my head and face everyday with cheap disposable razors. One lasts about 2 to 3 weeks. Bic sells them for less than a buck each. $1 barbasol shaving cream. Total annual grooming costs are less than $20 a year.

LT Dan, I was curious how the wedding went. Wasn't it this weekend?

Osaka, not everyone can use a cheap razor. That's why I started the thread. I shave a lot of man's chest hair at the Hospital. Some men have really wirey course hair and a cheap razor eats their flesh. I can use cheap razors and with the price of the Gillette fusions Im glad I can.

Squirrel Bait 02-27-2008 09:51 AM

Re: razors and hair cuts

I find this an almost funny thread, or at least what it has turned into. Perhaps disposable razors would be an excellent bartering item. BUT, they really aren't a survival item. Yes, Jaima, I understand, and feeling good is important too, but if it comes down to seeing my daughters skin and bones body or hairy legs/pits, well, I think we all know the answer.

I don't know how long disposable razors will store. If the edges are treated with something to prevent oxidation it could be a long time. They might already be, I don't know. Oxygen absorbers would help I guess. I have gone the route of the old fashioned straight razor. I have never used it. Well, I tested it on my arm after I sharpened it and it was much better than my Buck knife. I oiled it up and put it away.

"Shave and haircut, 2 bits" This too would be a good and needed barter item.

QWAK,I was 18 the first time I went to a barber and payed for it my self, money was tight growing up and Dad watched his barber and experimented on us till he got it down pat.

Mom learned to cut Dads hair and both my sisters till they left home. I got to figure what they saved over all them years HELPED a lot!:s9:

As part of MY survival gear I have a compleat barber set every thing you would find in just about any barber shop except the CHAIR. I had an old antique hydrolic barber chair but gave it away to a friend who helped me move after a fire in the building ware I had lived in Chicago.

I even found a set of old hand operated sheers at a flea market for $5.00 and added them.:D

Some one who can cut hair and help people feel better about how they look will likely be welcomed in any survival team and their abilities will serve them well in the long run.

Short term a SHAVE and a HAIR CUT will likely always be worth TWO BITS but that much SILVER will buy a WHOLE LOT in the FUTURE!:thinkey:

Duck? I didn't think 'feathers' needed to be trimmed other than to keep a bird from flying away....:tongue_ma:

I cut my own hair. Bought a $15 clipper from Wallyworld about 5 years ago. Cost per cut is pennies today. I keep it short, but that's ok.

Hair...is a lubricant. That's why it's located where it is.

Hair is also a 'radiator'. It wicks away sweat from the underarms where it then evaporates.

It keeps you warm. It also warns you if something is touching your skin.

It's also very smooth as compared to stubble - especially on legs...

It's natural. Unlike the brainwash-marketing that tells you to be something you are not. Shave, botox, silly cones, colored hair, liposuction, fake nails, etc. all superfluous idolatries.

I prefer my woman be healthy, clean, natural.

In a Mad Max world there won't be time for unnecessary grooming.

Everyone will be too busy surviving....

QWAK,Goldhedge,I am inclined to think that in a MAD MAX world, a HOT BATH,HAIR CUT and a SHAVE will be percieved as a LUXURY and could comand a high premium!

For the ones who GOT the STUFF it could be like feeling WEALTHY when others are depressed and dirty and it is hard to set a value on that.

IF it can help to lift DEPRESSED FEELINGS then I would not be so fast to dismiss it out of hand.

When the cowboys came in to town back in the old west or the miners from their claims, often first stop was the town bath house and barber!:thinkey:

In Nam I would treet my self to a hair cut, shave and back masage for about the equivlent of $.25 and come out feeling SOoooooooo much better!:s9:

I also scrubed out a 55gal. trash barrle and would drag it in to the shower aeria at 2 am when the jerry riged hot water tank was full and most GIs were sleeping. I would fill it with hot water from the shower head and I got to tell you geting a SOLK in some nice HOT WATER was a real TREET!:s9: I would leave it set up and often several GRUNTS coming in from LRPS would take turns using the bath water and THEY thanked me on more than one ocasion!:congrats:

Some times you got to be crusty dirty to do what got to be done, but it is the simple things like a BATH,hair cut and a SHAVE you find your self thinking about and wishing for, WILE you are doing IT!:s9:

Remember the old Gunsmoke TV show. Festus and the other cowboys would come to town for a once a month bath and shave before they headed to Miss Kitty's Salon.
I think Duck has the right idea.. If you have big steel drums and an old metal tub you can heat water and take a bath by the lake.

SB, of course food, water and shelter come before shaving our legs. On the other hand shaving your legs and arm pits takes the total of two-three minutes if you do it daily so why not?

Hmm, I get the impression some will consider women a hindrance and our needs frivolous WTSHTF.
